President of Winslow Rotary Club, Janette Hannon,Treks the Sahara!
Here is Janette’s description of her dramatic journey for the ‘Odyssey Challenging Cancer’ charity with £15,000 raised to date:
Over four and a half days, covering 100km, I trekked through the Moroccan Sahara. The terrain was constantly changing – from vast sand dunes and dried riverbeds to volcanic rock, with long uphill climbs and challenging descents. Each day we carried our own day packs with 3 litres of water, trekking through the intense heat of the midday sun.
The nights, however, were a complete contrast: bitterly cold, yet filled with
unexpected joy – including dormice roaming through the campsite!Twenty-three of us signed up for this incredible challenge. We were supported by a
medical doctor, two guides, and two camels whilst trekking. An advance team
pitched tents and cooked for us. Nine of us completed the trek in support of
‘Odyssey Challenging Cancer charity’, and together we have raised over £15,000 at
the latest count”.
Odyssey is a charity that supports people living with a cancer diagnosis, helping them rebuild confidence and self-esteem, re-engage with exercise, and take back control of their lives. As someone who has been on this journey and personally experienced Odyssey, this challenge was deeply meaningful to Janette. It is an experience that will never be forgotten.
Her thanks go to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and donated. A special
thank you to the Rotary Club of Winslow members.
Janette
